As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. These are games that meet all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on some aspect (e.g., air, naval, ground, operational, tactical, battle(s), etc.) of the Vietnam War (2) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of the conflict (or the specific aspect of the conflict) and (3) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). It's a little tongue-in-cheek, and comes with some heavy horror and sci-fi elements, but the gameplay and level design make excellent use of the Vietnam setting, giving the limitations of the engine.Below is my Top 10 list of games covering the Vietnam War.

Going slightly obscure, there's a mod for the original Half Life called Heart of Evil. Men Of Valour, made by the same company that did Medal of Honour: Allied Assault (albeit after a lot of the talent jumped ship to form Infinity Ward), is about the same: some good ideas held back by gameplay that is very much of its time. Unlike Vietcong, neither the graphics nor the gameplay aged too well. Community content is available under CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted. The rules were written for use with 20mm metal minis and have been used in that role a number of times. Not terrible, but it's far too linear and doesn't really use the setting all too well. This is a set of wargame rules for playing a middling size skirmish set in the American/Vietnam war.

The sequel isn't as good, and doesn't really have the unique Vietnam conflict flavour to it.īattlefield: Vietnam doesn't really use the setting in its second-to-second gameplay but it completely nails the aesthetic and the imagery: getting a team together and flying in on helicopters, blaring period music, and so on. Ergo: The Vietnam War was about money, like almost all wars have been, and whatever lives stood in the way of accruing it were a secondary consideration, at best. Its looks have dated poorly, but the gameplay is still all there.
